Pipefitting Program Outline

The SPSP Pipefitting Program leads to certificates internationally accredited by PAA/VQ-SET, City & Guilds and ACCET. The program is designed to provide students with a balanced combination of engineering theory and practical hands-on experience. This will ensure that on completion of the Pipefitting Program graduates will have the required job entry skills to work within the Petroleum Services industries. Each student will complete the Academic and PEO foundation training prior to covering the Pipefitting Program.

On completion of the Pipefitting program graduates will be able to:

  • Shape pipework components by material removal using hand and power tools to set industry tolerances.
  • State and use the different methods of joining non-metallic and metallic pipes.
  • Understand how heat exchangers, fin fans and re-boilers operate and their reason for use in the plant. Participants will be able to safely remove and test heat exchanger tube bundles.
  • Produce single line isometric drawings demonstrating their understanding of direction, proportion and dimension, as well as the different types of drawing used.
  • Safely set-up and operate and shut-down oxy-acetylene cutting equipment, straight line VCM cutters, orbital pipe cutters and manual torch cutting techniques.

  • Correctly identify piping symbols use in industry and state their understanding of hot bolting techniques and valve removal/replacement.
  • Carry out the different types and methods of pipe bending methods, the angles and radii required, heat lengths and template making.
  • Safely carry out manual and automatic pipe threading, pipe spool fabrication to set dimensions and tolerances using single line isometric drawings.
  • Consolidate skills, knowledge and understanding to fabricate welded spools from given isometric drawing, cutting lists and template wires.

Operations Program Outline

The SPSP Operations Program leads to certificates internationally accredited by PAA/VQ-SET, City & Guilds and ACCET. The program is designed to provide students with a balanced combination of engineering theory and practical hands-on experience. This will ensure that on completion of the Operations Program graduates will have the required job entry skills to work within the Petroleum Services industries. Each student will complete the Academic and PPO foundation training prior to covering the Operations Program.

On completion of the Operations program graduates will be able to:

  • Describe the fundamentals of hydrocarbon processing including; the properties of solids, liquids and gases, the properties of hydrocarbons, process variables and electricity.
  • Correctly identify the safety hazards within hydrocarbon operations and the safety measures used to reduce these hazards.
  • Accurately describe the different the types of drivers used for rotating equipment such as pumps, compressors and their operation.
  • Demonstrate their understanding of valves, tanks, vessels, columns, furnaces, boilers, coolers and heat exchangers.

  • Correctly interpret plant process drawings to trace the process flow, identify piping and instrument diagrams loops and symbols used.
  • Safely operate a plant simulator using flow and level control in accordance with manufacturer’s guidance and instructions.
  • Correctly describe the gas-oil recovery and processing production procedures.
  • Accurately describe the routine plant operator’s duties during plant operation and maintenance activities.
  • Follow procedures for tank, distillation, heat exchanger pilot and boiler simulator operations.
  • Safely carry out operations on the air compressor pilot plant rig.

HVAC Program Outline

The SPSP Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Program leads to certificates internationally accredited by PAA/VQ-SET. The program is designed to provide students with a balanced combination of engineering theory and practical hands-on experience. This will ensure that on completion of the HVAC Program graduates will have the required job entry skills to work within the Petroleum Services industries. Each student will complete the Academic and PEO foundation training prior to covering the HVAC Program.

On completion of the HVAC program students will be able to:

  • Describe the instruments and the units of measurement used in measuring temperature and pressure and describes the Refrigeration Cycle, Refrigerant and Refrigeration Oil.
  • Practice on copper tubing operations: measuring, cutting, reaming, bending, flaring, swaging, constricting, and pinching off.
  • Identify the standard electrical symbols and abbreviations and types of electrical diagrams, shows the characteristic of each one and practice reading electrical diagrams.
  • Maintain single-phase and three-phase electric motors, test windings and troubleshoot hermetic compressor motors.

  • Identify control circuit components, describe control circuit operation, test and connect control circuits
  • Service air-conditioning and refrigeration units. The standard procedures include testing for leaks, evacuating, charging, sampling oil, adding oil, replacing compressor, and perform preventive maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot domestic refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioning units, and central air conditioning units (up to 15 tons).

PCST Program Outline

The SPSP Process Control Systems Technician Program leads to certificates accredited by ACCET. The program is designed to provide students with a balanced combination of engineering theory and practical hands-on experience. This will ensure that on completion of the PCST Program graduates will have the required job entry skills to work within the Petroleum Services industries. Each student will complete the Academic and key skills training prior to covering the PCST Program.

On completion of the PCST course graduates will be able to:

  • Correctly perform specified bench work operations, fabricate a Circuit Base Plate, make wiring and Component terminations, and fabricate tubing
  • Correctly troubleshoot AC and DC circuits. All faults must be located and the proper corrective actions described.
  • Correctly troubleshoot instrument electronic circuits. All faults must be located and the proper corrective actions de-scribed.
  • Correctly troubleshoot instrument digital circuits. All faults must be located and the proper corrective actions de-scribed.
  • Correctly troubleshoot micro-controller-based control and application circuits. All faults must be located and the proper corrective actions described.

  • Correctly tune a basic process control system for optimum performance.
  • Troubleshoot and repair a pneumatic control loop. The repaired loop must operate as specified in the operational standards.
  • Test and repair rotating equipment monitoring system field services. The repaired system must operate as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Describe the operation of programmable logic controllers (PLC). State the Operation and Function of Distributed Control System.
  • Define the Operation of Electronic Control Loops. Define the Computing Function in Process Control Loops. Trouble-shoot and Repair Electronic Control Loop.

Drilling Program Outline

The SPSP Drilling Program leads to certificates internationally accredited by IADC and ACCET. The program is designed to provide students with a balanced combination of engineering theory and practical hands-on experience. This will ensure that on completion of the Drilling Program graduates will have the required job entry skills to work within the Petroleum Services industries. Each student will complete the Academic and Phase 1 foundation training prior to covering the Drilling Program.

On completion of the Drilling course graduates will be able to:

  • Complete the IADC Rig Pass program by understanding the principles, procedures and policies.
  • Correctly identify drill string components.
  • State the function and operation of rig hoisting equipment such as the drawworks, drilling line, blocks, hook and elevators.
  • State the function and operation of the rig circulation system such as the mud pumps, solids control and mud conditioning equipment.
  • State the function and operation of the rigs rotary system such as the top drive & swivel-kelly rotation equipment.
  • Operate rig floor equipment and perform rig floor tasks during drill string make up, break out and tripping procedures.

  • State the function and operation of well control systems such as the BOP and choke manifold.
  • State the function and operation of rig power generation systems and equipment.
  • Perform simple rig site maintenance on mud pumps, solids control equipment, swivel-kelly and top drive systems, hoisting equipment, rig floor pipe handling components and well control equipment.
  • Understand rig site HSE policies.
  • Identify rotary drilling rig safety precautions.

Rigging Program Outline

The program is designed to provide students with a balanced combination of engineering theory and practical hands-on experience. This will ensure that on completion of the Rigging Program graduates will have the required job entry skills to work within the Petroleum Services industries. Each student will complete the Academic and Basic Hand tools and Drawing foundation training prior to covering the Rigging Program.

The SPSP Scaffolding Program leads to certificates internationally accredited by CITB and ACCET. The program is designed to provide students with a balanced combination of engineering theory and practical hands-on experience. This will ensure that on completion of the Scaffolding Program graduates will have the required job entry skills to work within the Petroleum Services industries. Each student will complete the Academic and Basic Hand tools and Drawing foundation training prior to covering the Scaffolding Program.

  • Identify suitable scaffolding components.
  • Have an understanding of the acceptable condition of scaffold components.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Erect and dismantle scaffolds.
  • Work to international standards as prescribed by CITB for the erection and dismantling of specialist scaffold structures (CITB Part A & B).
  • Undertake the safe inspection & testing of scaffolding.

  • State the general principals of lifting.
  • Develop and utilise safe lifting plans.
  • Drive a mobile crane into position to carry out safe lifting.

  • Demonstrate the skills to configure the crane prior to lifting.
  • Demonstrate safe operation of forklift truck.
  • Safely check and operate a Mobile Elevated Work Platform.
  • Undertake specialist lifting operations to include, Personnel, Tandem Lifts, High level and long reach.
  • Hold Government license (SAG).
